Ultra-Sonic Scaling
Utrasonic instrumentation incorporated at Dr. Zimmerman's office is a
power-driven instrumentation to remove pathogens causing gum disease and
plague and tartar attached to the roots of teeth. This type of
instrumentation has been shown to be more efficient and effective over
manual instrumentation in the treatment of gum disease. Below are photos
showing the removal of stain from teeth using an ultrasonic device.
Periodontal
Irrigation
Irrigation devices are also used at Dr. Z's office. The deep pockets
associated with gum disease, in which bone loss has occurred, are irrigated
with a chemical solution to aid in the disinfection of the periodontal
pocket. This system is used in conjunction with ultrasonic instrumentation
as part of soft tissue management of gum disease at a Smile Resort.
Anti-Microbial Treatment
Atridox,
utilized as part of the soft tissue management program at Dr. Z's office, is
a subgingival controlled-release product and accepted by the ADA. The
anti-microbial agent is deposited into the deep pockets caused by gum
disease, where its anti-microbial activity is released over 7 day period to
reduce the number of periodontal pathogens found in the diseased pocket.
Used in conjunction with ultrasonic scaling aids in reducing pocket depth
and gum bleeding upon probing, thereby improving overall gum health of the
patient.
