RELAXATION
Oral Meds

At A Smile Resort, Dr Zimmerman can prescribe medications used by mouth to help cope with your dental treatment.  One such medication is called Triazolam.

What is it?

Triazolam also known as Halcion, is a sedative (benzodiazepines) hypnotic that can be prescribed by Dr Zimmerman to reduce anxiety associated with dental treatment.

How do you use it?

Simply fill the prescribed medication at your local pharmacy. Take 1-2 pills approximately 1 hour before the appointment and you feel the tranquil effect making yourself ready for Dr. Zimmerman to perform your prescribed dental treatment.  Remember you will need an adult to take you to and from the dental office when taking this sedative.

Who is a candidate?

Healthy patients who consider themselves a dental coward. In North American, it has been estimated that over 12 million Americans suffer from dental anxiety.  Dr. Z will assess your level and anxiety and review your medical history to determine if oral medication is for you.

Triazolam anti-anxiety effect

When ingested, the sedative travels to the brain to depress the limbic and other areas of the brain associated with emotion and behavior.  It major effects is attributed to its interaction with the neurotransmitter GABA receptor complex.  Once the medication reaches the therapeutic level, about 1 hour after swallowing, triazolam will increase the level of GABA. GABA in turn will slow down the neuronal activity in the brain causing us to feel nice and relaxed to cope with the prescribed dental procedure. It is also noted that triazolam has amnesic effect, so patients have the added benefit of having no memory of dental procedure performed.

Safety of Triazolam:

Safety of an oral sedative is dependent of the ratio of the L/D 50 dose and the concentration that provides sedation. This ratio is considered great for the benzodiazepine drug, Triazolam. Hence, based on research that for healthy patients, it has been estimated that lethal oral dose

Could be impossible to administer orally.  Dr. Zimmerman to ensure safety for his patient, stays abreast on continuing education, training in CPR, and has purchased pulse oximeter to carefully monitored vital signs of the patient are stable.

Pulse oximeter:  Use to monitor blood pressure, pulse rate, and oxygen saturation of the arterial blood with great accuracy during your dental visit.
